And STP had a tendency to write songs about more "regular" things than drug addiction (so no real claim on "artsy"). I've only seen STP once, and I thought Scott Weiland came across as arrogant and indifferent. STP was both elevated and burdened by Scott Weiland, and I'm not sure the fans felt much empathy for him (AIC fans had plenty of empathy for Layne Staley). Soundgarden had a gritty Seattle grunginess about them (they epitomized grunge), and the (more) charismatic Chris Cornell as front man. Layne Staley's unusual vocal style also set them apart. Heroin and drug life/abuse were AIC's subject matter, which gave them sort of a taboo/artsy/angsty/mystique thing. Whether or not that was intentional, I don't know, but maybe it did contribute to the band not being taken as seriously as Alice in Chains, Soundgarden, or. Their first big hit was "Plush", and on that song, the band sounded just like Pearl Jam, and Scott Weiland sounded just like Eddie Vedder. I think they are a great example of band that is massive when the singular parts are added together, but falter when they are apart. It's a shame that they couldn't keep it together. I even loved their self titled reunion album from a few years ago. Tiny Music is my favorite with Purple not far behind. The first album is my least favorite, though there are some terrific songs on it.

I think they had MUCH more to offer than just being a grunge copycat band, as some people still think of them.

The label stuck with them despite the fact that they moved past it. They were definitely riding the grunge trend on their first album and got lumped into that genre immediately and I don't think it's necessarily unfair, but they moved past that pretty quickly in reality, but I don't think that they were allowed to move past it in regards to critical assesment of their work. I think that the DeLeo's and Eric Kretz are fantastic musicians and I love Scott's voice and lyrics when he's at the top of his game.
